New York state police reported that a woman from Wayne was allegedly hit by a truck driver in late August 2013. The 39-year-old woman was driving a Subaru east on Interstate 84 when a big-rig truck driving in the opposite direction apparently lost control and swerved sharply. The truck then came across the median and hit the woman’s vehicle directly.
State police accused the 49-year-old male truck driver of being drunk at the time of the accident, charging him with driving while intoxicated, vehicular assault and illegal possession of an unspecified controlled substance. The woman sustained numerous severe injuries in the accident, and she was subsequently transported to Poughkeepsie’s St. Francis Hospital.
The woman’s injuries included traumas to her head, legs and internal organs, and her current medical condition was not specified. Police did not release details as to what initially caused the truck driver to lose control nor say whether or not this was the first incident he was involved in. Although the severity of the woman’s injuries and the serious nature of the accident will undoubtedly be taken into consideration, it remains unknown what if any legal proceedings will take place as a result of the events or what evidence made the police think that the trucker was under the influence.
DUI charges can make it extremely difficult for the accused to hold down jobs, and convictions may even be grounds for automatic dismissal from certain positions. Such charges can lead to long-term employment ineligibility and serious lifestyle changes for the family members of those involved. DUI attorneys may be able to help these individuals appeal their sentences or fight against the charges in court.
