A New York woman had a head-on collision and then crashed into a tree while she was allegedly drunk. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the woman also had three children in the vehicle with her at the time of the incident.
It took place on April 30 when the woman was driving westbound on a Long Island street. According to law enforcement officers, the woman crossed over the center line into the eastbound lanes, crashing into a 2015 Ford SUV. Police claim the woman then drove away from the accident scene, crashing through a guardrail on the north side of the street before crashing into a tree.
Emergency responders transported the 28-year-old woman to the Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for the treatment of injuries that were deemed minor. No one else was reportedly injured in the collision. Police say they found three children, ages 3, 7 and 9, in the woman’s vehicle. The woman, who was released from the hospital, was taken into custody on multiple charges, including aggravated driving while intoxicated with a person under the age of 16 in the vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated and other traffic offenses.
Drunk driving charges can be aggravated for multiple reasons, including if the alleged offense happens with minors in the vehicle. People who are facing such charges may be exposed to the possibility of incarceration upon conviction. A criminal defense attorney can sometimes strike a deal with the prosecutor that would provide for reduced penalties, such as alcohol awareness classes and community service, in exchange for a guilty pleas, especially if it was the defendant’s first offense.
