On Feb. 12, New York authorities reported that a 16-year-old man was charged with DWI after he was accused of causing a wrong-way crash. According to the report, the crash took place on Sunrise Highway service road in Bohemia.
The teenager was driving a GMC SUV south in the northbound lanes of Lakeland Avenue around midnight when he was spotted by authorities. A police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the teen fled. The teenager then collided with a Ford Fusion that was traveling through the intersection of Sunrise Highway north service road and Lakeland Avenue.
He suffered critical injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. In addition to the DWI charges, there were also additional charges that were pending. Authorities also issued him a field appearance ticket so that he could be arraigned at a later date. A 26-year-old woman who was driving the Ford also suffered injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
When minors are arrested for drunk driving, they face serious consequences. A criminal defense attorney may work with the prosecution to lessen the effect on the defendant’s future. For example, the attorney may come to an agreement with the prosecution that requires the defendant to undergo alcohol education and follow the terms of probation. In some cases, the attorney may even work to get the case dismissed if there is evidence that authorities did not follow proper procedures during the traffic stop.
